Choosing a Funeral Director

Choosing a funeral director can be difficult and stressful, particularly if the death of your loved one was unexpected or you have to make a quick decision. Here are some guidelines to help you:

  1. Ask for a recommendation from friends or relatives who have used a funeral director’s services. Alternatively, try to find out about the funeral directors in your area through local press or parish magazines.
  2. Choose a funeral director that is a member of a recognised trade body such as the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD). Members must abide by a Code of Practice, which ensures they treat their clients and the public fairly. They are also required to have price lists available showing the cost of the services they provide.

  3. Contact at least two funeral directors to get an estimate so you can compare costs . Funeral prices can vary widely depending on your requirements and this will help you to get the best value possible for the funeral services you need.
  4. Contact a funeral director as soon as you can, even if the death is yet to be registered, perhaps pending a post-mortem, for example. The sooner a funeral director becomes involved, the sooner they will be able to discuss your requirements and act on your behalf so the funeral will not be delayed unnecessarily once the death has been registered.
